Overcard: Third Street

Over Cards

If the only value to your hand is in its overcards, you are starting weak but can become strong on fourth street in stud poker by pairing one of your overcards. However, it is profitable to play such a hand in late position at these limits.

First some numbers: 3-2 and 2-1. These numbers are an easy method to remember overcard play. 3-2 means that if you have three overcards to the board (three cards higher than any of the other stud poker players' upcards) you can call against a maximum of two players who have limped in not counting the low-card forced bet. 2-1 means that if you have two overcards to the board, you can call against only one player who has limped in, why calling with overcards is late-position play: In early position, we don't know how many players will be in the pot.

There are also live cards. If that's not one of your big concerns in seven card stud you are either not paying attention or you are hopeless dolt intent upon giving away you a big advantage so that your children won't get their hands on it.

Calling a raise with such kind of hand worth? It depends. What hand do you think your rival is holding? If the raise comes from a player with a medium doorcard and if you know he raises with such hands (you have little information about your rival) you can call with two overcards and even consider re-raising with three overcards. The re-raise will guarantee you of playing the hand against only the medium pair. That will be better.

But what about being the original raiser? It also depends. Will the raise in late position turn out to be a successful ante-steal? That will be good – you will win a small pot than lose a big pot.

Your best result is to play heads-up against a small or medium pair, or a drawing hand

Now we shall discuss about K-Q-J and A-K-Q. The main purpose of playing them is that they are overcard value. But we didn't find any exciting of catching an ace to your K-Q-J or a jack to your A-K-Q. Then you should have a straight draw with only one end open – might as well be drawing to an inside straight. If you catch a ten to K-Q-J you now a legitimate straight draw with both ends open and you will play it accordingly.

The main purpose is in pairing one of those high cards and continuing to look for two big pair or a big set of trips.

A two-flush among your overcards gives the hand added value but only if your suit cards are completely live. Keep in mind you are holding only two-fifths of a flush at the start instead of three-fifths, which is long way in getting to the flush.

It doesn't look like hands with only overcard value would be worth playing. But if you play the overcard correctly, you can win couple of extra bets from your rivals

overcards are those hands that provide a good money-making potential in poker usually found in low-limit games. When your rivals are doing much third-street raising you can call more in late position when you know that you won't be raised. You can call with many hands that you otherwise might not play, because it is cheap to get in. Always take the advantage at getting a perfect card on fourth street.
